Me: What do you think about the verdict?
Alfred: I believe that it’s wrong.
Me: Why is that?
Alfred: The Jews should be eradicated.
Me: Aren’t they people just like you and me?
Alfred: No they are not equals to us.
Me: So you agree with all of Hitler’s ideas?
Alfred: Most of them.
Me: So do you think that you are guilty of all four major crimes?
Alfred: I believe what I did was right. Why else would I have done them?
Me: So you are justifying killing millions of people?
Alfred: It’s what you are taught as kids. Everyone thinks that they are lower people.
Me: Yet other countries don’t. Why don’t you see that others don’t?
Alfred: Like I said. It’s what you are taught as a kid.
Me: So it’s part of who you are?
Alfred: As much as my arm is.
Me: Why do your people hate all the Jews, gypsies, and others?
Alfred: We are taught it. We have lived under that impression for many years. You don’t kill an animal for what its mother teaches it.
Me: Isn’t the death of millions of people a bit of overkill?
Alfred: We never thought of it as that. We didn’t think of them as people.
Me: They had homes and families and friends. Don’t you feel any remorse?
Alfred: I don’t feel sorry. It was a business. It was part of our life since we were twelve. Me: So you find nothing wrong with it? Alfred: It’s a long hard business. Me: Do you regret anything you did? Alfred: Getting caught. Me: Did these kinds of things happen in your country? Alfred: It was happening all over Europe. Me: So it was uniform all over? Alfred: Yes, all over the continent.
